WHY I DO WHAT I DO:Art can mean a lot of things to different people. For some, art is a sense of comfort, a peaceful way to express oneself. For others, art represents a sense of freedom, an act of rebellion or to break the mold. For me, art provides an outlet for me to bring my stories to life. As a child, I filled journals with stories inspired by dreams and games with friends. Initially, I aspired to be an author, but my love for comics, video games, and animation shifted my focus. Inspired by the heartfelt, fun, and immensely whimsical works of Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey, I pursued animation to bring my stories to life. However, I soon felt out of place, comparing my doodles to my classmates' polished work. In an effort to prove myself, I created complex narratives but neglected the artistic skills needed to execute them. By my junior year, I questioned my place in the industry.
The summer before my senior year, I reconnected with my original passion: telling fun, heartfelt stories. That realization inspired my senior project, A Sprinkle of Wallace, which follows a kitten named Sprinkles and her imaginary friend, Wallace, as she learns that love isn’t something to be earned. This project reflects my journey—learning to embrace my skills, love myself, and appreciate the support of others. I strive to experiment with many animated mediums, whether it’s through traditional animation, pixel animation, computer graphics or stop motion - I want to try them all. Throughout this journey, I want to grow in my skills and to truly make something I hope others would enjoy. Moving forward, I want to create work that stays true to me, sharing stories that bring joy, warmth, and a little bit of silliness to the world. |
